Well... Since it's all the rage now to do pages telling all the little mudane things about your life, I decided to try it. (Actually, I don't know if it what everyone's doing. And I don't really care. I'm just bored, so decided to waste some time till I got some e-mail to read.) So, without further ado, all about me:
Well... Let's see... vital stats first I think. I'm 5 foot, 3 1/2 inches tall (Half inches are very important to the vertically challenged). I have blue eyes and brown hair. For some reason, everyone seems to notice my eyes. <shrug> I also have the habit of painting my fingernails bizzare colors, like copper, gold, black, blue, or purple... I have terrible vision without glasses, like in the 20/400 range. (A normal person can see 20/20. 20/400 means what other people can see at 400 feet, I can only see at 20 feet), and I'm nearsighted. Luckily, I can wear contacts. Well, anyway, maybe I'll put a picture of myself up here... I'll think about it... Oh, all right... just go here. Just make sure you hit the 'back' button on your browser and come back to read the rest of this!! (Note: You can't really go there at the moment... link is down.)
I'm 24 years old, Sagittarius, and work full-time as a reservationist for a chain of hotels in the yuppie tourist trap of the west coast, Carmel California. I'm not going to college, will probably go back sooner or later. I've decided that I want to make college my hobby. I like learning, I just always hated homework and tests. So, if I take it just for my personal gratification, I won't care one way or another!
What else... Hmm... Likes and dislikes? 'Kay... Well, Let's start with music:
I like just about every type of music known to man, except whiny country and gansta rap. My current favorites (I seem to change them quite often) is Nine Inch Nails and Sarah McLachlan. I own a very eclectic collection of CDs. I have been known to go into a music store and buy a Nine Inch Nails CD, a Mozart CD, and a movie soundtrack CD. I listen to music about 80% of my waking hours. So, a player is an essenstial to my life. I used to use a walkman, which was a tad idiotic of me. See, I'd buy a CD because I like the CD form better than cassette. Then, I'd buy a blank cassette and tape the CD to cassette so I could listen to it on my walkman while I was away from the house. I finally wised up and bought a portable CD player (Next is a portable computer to use as an MP3 player! Also, will be used for email on vacation...). In case you're wondering, it's a Sony Diskman. To name some of the groups I listen to: Nine Inch Nails, Enya, Fiona Apple, The Police, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, Mozart, Beethoven, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Sarah McLachlan, Barenaked Ladies, Squirrel Nut Zippers, They Might Be Giants, Paula Cole, Disney movie soundtracks, Nicholas Gunn, Mono, Garbage, Queen, Pink Floyd, ZZ Top, Gregorian Chant... And that's to name just a few. I also have a special place in my heart for rock and roll of the 1970's, as that's what I grew up on. <wave to Dad!>. I also adore soundtracks and music complemations of mixed groups because you get a great variety of music. And in the instrumental field, my favorites are the 5th Element soundtrack (it has an awesome score) the Men in Black theme, and the Imperial March from the Star Wars movies (One of my half-serious dreams is to be followed by someone carrying a tape player that is playing nothing but the Imperial March over and over again). Oh yeah, and I'll just mention that I know how to play the flute. I haven't really touched one in over two years, but I can play one.
I'm an internet junkie, especially e-mail and IRC. If you're ever on the Efnet of IRC, you can probably find me under the nickname of Ninjababe (of course). You can e-mail me here. I spend most of my time multi-tasking on the computer, playing on IRC, on e-mail, and writing stories. (I'm such a net nerd.) Sometimes, I take time out from my busy schedule to play Super Nitendo, Playstation, and computer games. I usually play role playing games. I'm totally addicted to the Final Fantasy series. In fact, that's the sole reason I bought the Playstation. Some of my favorite computer games are Discworld, Discworld II, and Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father.
I love to read... I'm a regular bookworm and have been known to go through multiple books in a day. I was once clocked at reading a page at 30 seconds, but that was years ago, so I may be faster or slower now. I read mostly fiction, usually science fiction and fantasy. Some of my favorite sci-fi/fantasy authors include Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, Piers Anthony, Elizabeth Moon, and Terry Pratchett. I also enjoy murder mysteries by Agatha Christie and James Bond novels by Ian Fleming and James Gardner. I'm also a former collector of comic books. I used to collect the X-Men titles and Gen13 to name just two. I have over 600 comics in my collection at the moment. Reason I stopped collecting? It takes way too much money, and I just wasn't that interested anymore. It felt like all the plots were taken, and the comic companies were more interested in T&A coverage, double sized issues, and crossovers with other titles (a few is ok, but the amount I was seeing was way too much) than with storylines.
TV: I don't watch much TV (I personally think). Usually, I just watch La Femme Nikita, X-Files, Earth: Final Conflict, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel: The Series, Farscape, Gundam Wing, Dragonball Z, and West Wing. However, I do like the tv shows the Professionals, Red Dwarf, Forever Knight, Highlander, Sentinel, due South, Vengance: Unlimited, and Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, even though they have been cancelled, or show up only in certain parts of the country. Also, my roommate is got me hooked on Blake's 7. (The evil wench!) I collect Red Dwarf tapes, which I think is one of the two greatest British comedies of all time. Monty Python is my other all time favorite British comedy show (I believe that the movie Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail is one of the best comedies of all time). Oh! And I also collect anime. My favorite movie so far is Devil Hunter Yohko. Series is Gundam Wing with Yu Yu Hakusho as a very close second.
Woah, I'm really talking here, ain't I? Oh well, I'm enjoying it, and I guess that's all that matters.
My family: My parents have been happily married for 25 years now, and I have an 21 year old brother. A good 8/10ths (or more) of my relatives live in Florida, mostly based in the Cocoa area. My mom is retired Air Force, medical field, and my dad works for a computer firm. My parents and brother live in Tennessee.
Umm... what else? Hmmm...
Well, my favorite animals are wild cats (especially white tigers), sharks (they are so cool and interesting) and just about any baby animal there is (I have a soft spot for babies). I'm a member of the Monterey Bay Aquarium (It's where they filmed bits of Star Trek IV. The one with the whales) which has one of my all time favorite exhibits, the Outer Bay. Here, you can sit and watch a two story, huge tank full with sharks, tuna, barracuda, a sea turtle, and even a sunfish (even though the sunfish gives me the willies. To me, it looks like a giant, diseased, decaying pancake). It is so peaceful and awesome.
I love to travel. In one year alone, I've gone to Union Square in San Fransisco for Christmas, New Orleans for a convention, on a Caribbean cruise (Visited Mexico, the Grand Cayman Islands, and Jamaica), looked around Sequioa/King's Canyon National Park, bummed around Yosemite National Park, toured Sedona and the neighboring native american ruins, and snapped a roll or two of photos at the Grand Canyon. Because my mother was in the Air Force, I have moved quite a bit in my life. I've lived in North Carolina, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, and even England.
Well, Desmond, my alien in a test tube, says enough trivial stuff. So, on to my social views!
WARNING!
Some people could find the following offensive, demeaning, or just plain terrible. Tough. They're my opinions, and since I live in a country that allows free speech, I'm going to make them.
There, now that I got that out of the way...
First topic:
Let's choose a big one. Abortion.
My views on abortion. Well, I'm pro-choice. But, I do have limits. I believe that people shouldn't be able to go and get an abortion just because they were careless enough not to use preventive measures, such as condoms. As far as I know, there are places people can get condoms for free in their community, such as the a community health center. Granted, it won't be a glow in the dark, strawberry flavored, ribbed for her pleasure condom, but it would work.
Now, if a woman did get pregnant, even after using preventive measures, she should be able to get an abortion. After all, the only preventive of pregnancy that is 100% is abstenance. But, if you expect the American public to actually practice abstinance, you need to return to your home dimension...
Also, I am totally against third trimester abortions. By this time, I consider the fetus to be a human being, and abortion at this stage is murder. So, I personally believe the cut off point of abortion is where, if the fetus was born at that time, it could survive without depending on machines to live. Which, if I remember correctly, happens sometime in the second trimester. I can't pin it down farther, as I only have a vague understanding of fetus development.
The only time I am 100% behind abortion is if the pregnancy is caused by rape, incest, or other non-consensual sex.
Also, I believe abortion is here to stay. Even if we make it illegal, women would just go and get them like they did before Roe vs. Wade. And, personally, I'd rather not be in a country where people were using vacuum cleaners and coat hangers...
And, that's my view of abortion. Agree or disagree all you want. That's your right.
Next topic: Religion! Specifically, my religious beliefs
OK... I'm slightly ambiguous when it comes to religion. (And I'm not saying that for everyone to e-mail me and try to convert me to their religion. I do not like people who insist on turning me to the true religion, otherwise known as their religion.) I mean, I know there's a supreme being, maybe supreme beings, I'm just not sure of who it is. No, wait... I'm saying this wrong.
OK... let's try this again. I do believe in a supreme being. The gods and goddesses of the ancient Greek parthenon are actually just facets of the supreme being in my opinion. Same thing with the Christian god, the Hindu gods, the Mayan Gods, the Incan Gods, the Norse Gods, etc. So, in my opinon, everyone is right in their religious beliefs.
As for the creation between scientists and the bible... <steps on soapbox>. All right... Scientists state that the earth evolved over billions of years, and Christian belief is that God created the earth in 6 days. Well, I personally don't see any disagreement with that. Who says that God's version of a day is the same as a human's? For all we know, a day for God could equal billions of years. So, there is no reason the earth couldn't be billions of years in the making and only be 6 days old. It just matters on your perspective.
Confused? Well, I did say my views were slightly ambiguous.
In a discussion about religion, I may ask why you believe something, but I won't argue that your beliefs are wrong. It's not my place to do that.
Next topic: Homosexuality
I believe that everyone has the right to love, no matter what package that person is in. In fact, I personally believe that all humans are actually bisexual in nature, and it's just society's restraints that determine that we are not. Biologically, we're mostly built heterosexual, but the emotional part of sexuality has little to do with plumbing.
Gun Control
I have a theory why guns are so prevalent in America. See, when most of the world went from wilderness to civilization, spears, swords, and bows and arrows were the weapons of the world.
But, when America was civilized, guns were the weapons of choice. So, we all 'grew up' with guns. We became dependant on them.
I personally don't like guns much. But, I seriously doubt they're going away.
I believe in gun control. But, we definately aren't getting there at the rate we're going!
Capital Punishment
I keep going back in forth on capital punishment. There are some crimes so hideous that I believe in capital punishment for them, but then again, I think it's wrong to take a human life, except as a last resort in self defense.
Euthanasia
For those who don't know... Euthanasia is assisted suicide. 'Mercy killing' is the definition I got from a dictionary.
I believe euthanasia is a perfectly viable option for those who are terminally ill.
But, you have to think... Who know what medical advances are going to be made in the next year, the next month, even the next week...
On the other hand, if a person decides that they cannot live with the illness they have anymore, they should have the right to end the pain.
Prostitution
I believe that prostitution should be legalized.
If prostitution is legalized, there would be less diseases spread as prostitutes would have to prove they're clean to work. They'd be paying taxes on their work. It would free up police officers that currently work to bust prostitutes. And, it's quite possible that the number of child prostitutes would be cut down.
