I, along with my fellow addictees, are going to conquer the world through Red Dwarf addiction!! (Cue the dramatic music maestro). Slowly but surely, everyone everywhere will be addicted to Red Dwarf! That is the sacred quest of the Red Dwarf Addicts Corps (RDAC for short)! We will prevail even if it means showing Red Dwarf to every person from here to Alpha Centauri!
Contained on this sacred site is basic information of the glorious show Red Dwarf, and has (or will soon have) images, sounds, links, and all that Good Stuff <tm>.
Dave Lister....Craig Charles
Arnold Rimmer..Chris Barrie
Holly..........Norman Lovett (series I-II, VII-on)
Holly..........Hattie Hayridge (series III-V)
The Cat........Danny John-Jules
Kryten.........Robert Llewellyn
Kristine Kochanski......Chloe` Annett (series VII-on)
And now for some background of the crew of the mining ship Red Dwarf...
First, there's Dave Lister. Lister is the lowest ranking crew member on the ship (well, technically, the laboratory mice are below him as seen in the first episode "The End"). His roommate is Arnold J. Rimmer, who is also his direct superior. Lister is a slob, plain and simple. But, he is also considered the moral one of the crew.
Then, there's Arnold J. Rimmer. Rimmer, the second lowest ranking crew member on Red Dwarf, is best described as a... well, an egotistical, unreliable, cowardly elitist who can't past the exam to become an officer even though he's taken it 9 to 13 times (Depends on which episode you watch). A good description, from the episode 'Angels and Demons'. "You're a toad Rimmer, you're a weasel, you're a slimy river dwelling rodent with the morals of a praying mantis." Rimmer is absent during most of series VII, as he goes off to be the new Ace Rimmer.
And the two Hollys
Series I-II, VII-on. Holly is the ship's computer. He has the IQ of 6,000, and runs every single thing on the ship. However, he has gone a bit batty during the three million years Red Dwarf has been hurtling away from Earth.
Series III-V. Holly had a head sex change. He is now a she. According to the beginning of series III (which you can't read unless you have a good pause button. It's like the beginning of a Star Wars movie in very fast motion.), "Holly, the increasingly erratic computer, performs a head sex change operation on himself. He bases his new face on Hilly, a female computer with whom he'd once fallen madly in love." But Holly still has the same personality.
Holly doesn't show up in any of series VI, and Holly doesn't show up until the last episode of series VII. When he does show up, he's back to his old face, and same personality.
And The Cat. The Cat is, well, a cat in humanoid form. He owns at least 11 racks of clothes (According to the episode 'Future Echos'), and is always preening himself. He spends all his time making sure he looks good and looking for females. In other words, he's a cat...
Kryten, a series 4000 sanitation android, is the brains on Red Dwarf. Lister has been working on making him more human by teaching him to lie, cheat, steal, and insult, with some results...
Kristine Kochanski becomes a main character in series VII. She is actually a parallel universe version of Kochanski. In her home universe, she was the one who was caught with Frankenstein, Lister's cat, which she had confiscated from him. She was put in stasis instead of Lister. Holly brought Lister back as a hologram in her universe instead of Rimmer in the universe we know.
In Series VIII, the crew actually get back to Red Dwarf (Finally!), only to find that the nano-bots not only brought back the ship, but the crew as well (Including Rimmer, who remembers nothing of the trip since the drive plate was destroyed 3 million + years ago)! Of course, Dave and crew get into major trouble for everything that happened, and have to spend life in jail. (The crew knows nothing of the 3 mill+ years that have passed).
You can find Red Dwarf on your local PBS possibly. Or, you can ask around at your local video stores. If they don't carry the series, you may be able to special order them. I've found that you can buy a tape of Red Dwarf for about $20. There are three episodes per tape (half a series).
At the moment, there are eight series. My local PBS (KTEH) actually showed series VIII in one long chunk, and we actually got to see some of the episodes before the first airing in England!
About Series VII:
My PBS not only showed all of series VII, they also did a Red Dwarf
weekend... A meeting with Craig Charles and Robert Llewellyn (Who The Prez
got to meet <g>) and then a two day marathon of Red Dwarf showing every
single episode from the first all the way to the end of SeriesVII.
I love my PBS.
