I've seen the first movie and read NONE of the books.

I missed the first wave of Potter fuss. I'm not into that sort of hype -- I may have let it drive me away from the things. But one day about a year ago I picked up Prisoner of Azkaban (no. 3). I was impressed enough to read the other four that were out at the time. I didn't watch the first movie until a few months ago. I rented it out on dvd. I found it charming as well. The works aren't earth-shatteringly wonderful, they won't change your life or anything, but they are fun reads and the first movie wasn't bad. I'll eventually rent out film number two, and at some point in the future pick up book 5, whatever it's called. But not now -- maybe when it comes out in paperback. I'm not in a hurry. If you want to know, so far I think Prisoner of Azkaban is the best of the series (that I have read).

I think the hoopla kind of turned me off. It's not that I won't read them, it's just that there are so many other books waiting to be read, they're not a priority.

I think we actually own the DVD...? I'll have to rot around and see!

Yes, we own the DVD... Of both of the movies, if I'm not mistaken... Know we have at least the first one...

If it makes you feel any better, you're not the only one: I have been studiously ignoring the whole Harry Potter phenomenon ever since it started.

Don't be fooled by their popularity: the books are wonderful.

Oh, all my friends tell me that :) I'll probably read them one of these years.
