"The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them." ~ Thomas Merton
C & S Jen has a lovely post on love and selfishness.

Posted by: Emily on January 16, 2003 5:35 PMIt is, isn't it?
Posted by: Ith on January 16, 2003 5:42 PMLike the quote. Couldn't relate to the article though, so I didn't care for it much. Thanks for sharing though :)
Posted by: Annmarie on January 18, 2003 6:02 AMWell, different strokes :)
I found it so right on. Especially this bit: Not that I don't struggle with this, I do. We all do to some extent. But lately (offline) I've encountered a few too many self-described 'deep' people who seem to think that treating someone coldly based on how they look, or what job they have, or whether or not they're witty enough, is good enough reason not to be kind or even decent. Despite claiming religious sensibilities. Despite claiming to be more aware than your average bear. I see them snub people because they aren't as fashionable or as thin or as witty or because they won't be 'complimented' on hanging out with this person by those from whom they feel they need approbation of that sort.
It just is so true to my life. As a kid, you're bullied unmercifully and when you grow up, the bullying stops, but still, if you're not the 'right' sort of person, you're written off. Whether in the workplace or in your social life.
Things never change. (yes, I'm in a 'deep' mood today [g])
